Mairéad Stack of NatureCubsIreland is a Heritage in Schools Specialist for The Heritage Council. She delivers fun, educational nature classes to primary school children that are directly linked to the Geography and Science SESE Curricula. We also offer these services to schools not participating in the Heritage in Schools Scheme and to Secondary Schools. Classes are developed to suit children in a particular age category. Each visit is specific to the habitats, school grounds and locality of that school and teachers are given tailor-made resource packs. We facilitate fieldtrips also.
Mairéad introduces Irish nature and biodiversity to school children. She is happy to bring nature into the classroom if it is not possible to bring the children on field-trips. Teachers’ requirements for each visit are paramount when deciding on content. If children cannot be brought off-site, then Mairéad works with what is in the school and brings nature into the school.
Topics that can be covered include:
- Local and Irish habitats
- Local biodiversity and wildlife
- Pollinators and School Pollinator Plans
- School Wildlife Plans
- What we can do to help wildlife in Winter
- Geology and rocks
- How to be a Wildlife detective; in search of tracks and trails
- Bird Identification
- Wildlife crafts
- Nature trails and tree trails
- How to grow your garden
- Bugs in bushes and trees
- Coastal ecology
- Seashell Identification
- Freshwater ecology
- Raised Bogs
- Freshwater pond dipping
Any Natural Sciences topic can be covered and Mairéad is delighted to discuss your ideas and accommodate your requests.
Outside learning is a big part of the programme. Older children will be encouraged to ask questions, formulate their own hypotheses, develop methods of survey and test those methods. Younger children will enjoy looking for birds, bugs and enjoy getting up close to nature. Mairéad has good spoken Irish and would be happy to use Gaeilge throughout the class.
